Another Magnum goes under the knife

As is becoming increasingly apparent, our Manhattan Magnum Masters swim group is aging and almost everyone has had some sort of physical problem and/or recent surgery (shoulder, hernia, knee, heart) and Coach Bruce is no exception.

At 7:30 pm at Little Company of Mary hospital in Torrance on Sunday, September 4, 2011, Bruce underwent emergency gall bladder surgery (gangrene had set in and fortunately for Bruce he decided to go to the hospital in the early afternoon when his severe pain did not subside).

Bruce was aware of his gall bladder situation and had an appointment with his doctor on September 6 to schedule the surgery.  He was able to go to the USC vs. Minnesota football game the day before surgery, but had to leave at half time.  When the stomach pain did not subside, Bruce (wisely at it turns out) decided he had to go to the hospital.

I always thought gall bladder surgery was for old ladies and it may be hard for Bruce to live this one down, but gangrene can set in any body organ due to lack of blood flow (arteries become obstructed after surgery or injury) and/or by bacterial infection.

Anyway, the surgery went well and Bruce is now being treated for some sort of infection and should be released in a day or two from the hospital.  Meanwhile, the MMM' will have to get by without Coach Bruce for 2 weeks or so.
